Self Care
Notes from the Margins
Self care can be any activity or practice, that you do to maintain or to improve your own physical, mental, emotional well being.
It’s not all about pampering yourself with spa days or little treats. It’s about taking the responsibility for your own health and happiness.
It can include things such as:
Physical self care; eating well, staying hydrated, exercising, getting enough sleep, and looking after your personal hygiene.
Emotional self care; setting boundaries, allowing yourself to rest, practising self compassion, and taking part in activities that you enjoy.
Mental self care; could be learning new things. The management of stress, therapy or getting support when it's needed. Acknowledging overwhelming situations and taking breaks from them.
Social self care; maintaining healthy relationships, spending time with loved ones, knowing when to step back from toxic environments, situations and people. When to say NO without an excuse.
Spiritual self care; engaging in practices that give you a sense of meaning, whether that’s meditation, time in nature, or in religion.
Self care isn’t selfish, it helps you to function at your best so that you can handle life’s challenges, and support others without burning out. It’s about balance, not indulgence. Practice it guilt free!.
